The Banyan trees were originally located in a semi circle around the temple. It became necessary to relocate them to protect the perimeter of the Inner Sanctuary thereby also freeing up the space around the fountain, Temple Adi Da and Free Standing Man.

As you can see from the pictures below, it was a very big project made easier with heavy equipment. The first relocation area was for the parking lot where two trees were planted. You can see from the series of pictures what it took to dig the hole, dig up the tree, relocate it and plant it. The nice thing about the Banyan trees is that they don’t have a deep root ball under ground. Most of their roots are lateral in growth pattern and come from the branches down to the soil.

In total, we have relocated 28 Banyan trees. The others are lining the front side of the Sanctuary just behind the parking lot. They form a row all the way from the parking lot to behind Grace Straightens.

Molucca albizia (Falcataria moluccana) while stunning in their presentation are considered a dangerously invasive species in Hawaii. Introduced in the past 20 years, the tree grows very rapidly and can quickly colonize disturbed areas in wet environments. The tree is prone to shedding large, heavy, brittle branches, which have been responsible for damaging power lines, houses, and other infrastructure in Hawaii.

At Da Love Ananda Mahal, we have a plethora of Albizia trees which have not only dominated the skyline, but also have grown into some precarious places. As you can see from the photos here, several of them line the property near our neighbors. In total, we fell about 20 trees of heights up to 100 ft. We had to use a boom truck and heavy equipment to make sure all of the trees were fell safely. This was an important project as it not only made it safer during windy conditions but also made it so we could carry on with our Banyan relocation project. Since the Albizia trees are fast growers, they tend to use up a lot of nutrients in the soil, as a result, they become very good to utilize as a high nitrogen mulch. So we were able to chip some of the trees to use as mulch for feeding our other trees as well as provide a barrier for weed and vine growth around trees and bushes.
