The Banyan trees were originally located in a semi circle around the temple. It became necessary to relocate them to protect the perimeter of the Inner Sanctuary thereby also freeing up the space around the fountain, Temple Adi Da and Free Standing Man.
As you can see from the pictures below, it was a very big project made easier with heavy equipment. The first relocation area was for the parking lot where two trees were planted. You can see from the series of pictures what it took to dig the hole, dig up the tree, relocate it and plant it. The nice thing about the Banyan trees is that they don’t have a deep root ball under ground. Most of their roots are lateral in growth pattern and come from the branches down to the soil.
In total, we have relocated 28 Banyan trees. The others are lining the front side of the Sanctuary just behind the parking lot. They form a row all the way from the parking lot to behind Grace Straightens.
